Writing Residencies 101

Ever dream of writing your book on the beach in Brazil? From a hilltop castle in Italy? In a boat-turned-writing-studio in the Canadian Rockies? With friends in a cottage nestled in a California vineyard? Drawing upon her experience attending 20 writing residencies around the globe and serving as a juror for 5, Faith leads a masterclass for writers interested in applying for that proverbial room of one’s own.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie: Americanah: A Novel (ALOUD-LA)

Acclaimed, award-winning author Chimamanda Adichie ends her tour of acclaimed novel in L.A. with a conversation with Faith. A powerful new story of love and culture clash between two Nigerian friends across several decades and three different continents—keenly observing race, identity, and belonging in today’s globalized world.

Badass Black Girl Vlog

MJ talks with Faith about the role identity plays in informing her art. They discuss her experience with fibroids and how it led to her book The Nigerian-Nordic Girl's Guide to Lady Problems, and the broader implications for Black bodies in the industrial medical complex. Faith talks about reconnecting with her African roots, the similarities between Nordic and Nigerian cultures, and how she stays centered during the pandemic and chaos of 2020.

The Nomadic Network Book Club

Faith Adiele is a very talented travel writer and also super nice — one of my favorite humans. This book chronicles her life in Thailand and how she became the first black Buddhist nun in the country. It’s a remarkable book about finding your place in the world." -Nomadic Matt.

Hybrid Writing for Hybrid Lives (Memoir Nation Podcast)

This week’s show features guest Faith Adiele, who’s just released two chapbooks in conversation with one another that are a springboard for a conversation about hybrid writing, hybrid memoirs, the popularity of chapbooks, and hybrid forms. If you’re a writer who’s been told “you can’t do that,” this episode will be validating, if not vindicating. The publishing world is playing catch-up to the creativity writers are bringing to the fore, and Faith is at the forefront, breaking both rules and boundaries. LISTEN HERE

Essay as Form (Bay Area Book Fest Podcast)

The essay’s subjective and fragmented nature enables writers to grapple with complexities without the restrictions of systematic, traditional approaches to writing (Theodor W. Adorno, “The Essay as Form”). It liberates the essayist to take a nuanced look at the world. This enriching panel, moderated by writer and professor Faith Adiele, will explore the essay-writing process with authors who have published essays in diverse contexts. LISTEN HERE.

Back by Popular Demand: Passing Through Bandit Territory (There She Goes Podcast)

Today we travel with travel writer and editor Faith Adiele to southern Thailand, where, on a pilgrimage in search of famous nuns, she finds her plans abruptly changed by a group of drunken businessmen, one small, sleepy boy, and the threat of bandits. LISTEN HERE.

Bonus Episode: The Creative Life (Career Stewardship Podcast)

Here’s one of Michael’s favorite episodes from “Meanwhile.” He speaks with noted author, teacher, citizen of the world, and now writer on the HBO series “A World of Calm,” Faith Adiele, who also happens to be his close friend of 30+ years. Faith helps to examine what we mean by creativity, how we can misconstrue it and recover it, and what it means to express our creativity – whether in our day job or elsewhere else. Plus she has a really cool exercise you can do. A funny and informative conversation. LISTEN HERE.

Oh The Places You'll Go: Travel in 2025 (KQED Forum)

Last year, visitors flocked to the path of the solar eclipse, packed up to visit national parks and headed abroad. While climate change and overtouristing are impacting travel, post-COVID wanderlust shows no sign of abating in 2025. Maybe it will be a trip to Belgrade, Benin or the Bold Coast of Maine. We talk to travel experts about places we’ve been and where we should go in the new year. What’s on your travel bucket list? LISTEN HERE.
