June is for brides & writers
After a week in Seattle with my mum, attending the Seattle International Film Fest (SIFF), which is wrapping up a 4-year commitment to African films, checking out the Food section at the iconic Elliott Bay Bookstore, where it's clear that Nordic food is having a moment, and decompressing, I believe I may be ready for JUNE.
This weekend I'm presenting at the Bay Area Book Fest, moderating a panel on Memory, History, Race and the American Landscape and speaking on a sold-out panel on why Memoir is the Genre Folks Love to Hate (apparently). Next weekend I'm reading at the Mixed Remixed Fest, a daylong event for mixed folks and families in Los Angeles.
The second half of June is exciting teaching in fabulous locales. First up is Miami, where I'll be leading the nation's only workshop for travel writers of color for the third time through VONA/Voices. I have an amazing bunch this time. I fly straight from there to Esalen in Big Sur, where my husband and I will not be getting naked in the hot tub. I had to pass up the opportunity to be a judge at San Francisco Pride, which tells you how busy June is!
